17 Apr Kenilworth CC v Barby CC 1st C1
Barby came a close second to Kenilworth on Saturday in a game that could easily have gone the other way had fortune smiled.

Batting first, Barby lost Adam Shay in the first over which brought Will Tarrant and Adithya Chandran together to form the biggest partnership of the match. On a difficult surface for batting both looked solid before falling in the 30’s. Few other batsmen looked comfortable as Kenilworth’s change bowlers obeyed the time honoured principle of bowling straight and letting the pitch do the work.

Nevertheless a total of 140 was in many respects above par and that certainly looked the case when 3 wickets fell in the first 6 overs. Liam Franks struggled to find rhythm but still picked up wickets whilst Chandran bowled tidily at the other end.

A solid innings of 28 by Chris Prophet however was able to inch Kenilworth towards the victory target as Joel Gleghorn shorn of 4 regular bowlers ran out of options. At 132 for 8 with the game in the balance a tough chance went down at slip that could perhaps have seen momentum shift to Barby but it wasn’t to be.

All in all a disappointing defeat but positives to be taken. Chandran, Tarrant and Joel Gleghorn looked in good touch as did new recruit Adam Vinson. Veteran Rob Field, back from a foot operation took an athletic one handed catch on the boundary and the ground fielding overall was excellent.
Barby face Nuneaton next week at the BCG when they will hope to return to winning ways.
