Interview with Mal Loye

Interview with Mal Loye

Mal Loye – Director of Cricket

Over the winter we welcomed ex Northamptonshire, Lancashire and England batsman Malachy Loye to the club as our first Director of Cricket. For those who don’t remember Mal from his playing days his stats are impressive.

In a first class career spanning 20 years he amassed 25000 runs in all formats with over 50 centuries. A Google search shows that he’s probably best remembered for stupidity slog sweeping a 90mph delivery from Brett Lee for 6…..Then he did it to Glenn McGrath!. Given that impressive track record and the fact he stole my trademark shot, we thought we’d ask him to share some views on the game and what he’s looking forward to at Barby.

What brought you to Barby?

I live nearby in Norton and wanted to be involved in the community. I drove past the club one day with my daughter and thought I could see myself enjoying it here.

I can identify with that- I did exactly the same about 15 years ago!! What are you looking forward to most?

Making a difference ! I’m particularly looking forward to working with the junior boys and girls. I want cricket to be fun and them to enjoy coming back- hopefully with more friends!

Thinking back to your playing career, you achieved a  lot. Who was your most feared opponent ?

Wasim Akram- i still have nightmares! He was big, he was quick, he was nasty and big, and nasty and fast and….

At that point Mal went silent and I decided to stop the interview and buy him another pint.

It’s an absolute pleasure having him at the club. In the few short weeks at nets he’s already taught many of us more than we have learnt in years. We all look forward to the season and hope he also enjoys playing a few games with us and enjoys the bar and teas.

The good news is that the closest thing we have to Wasin Akram is Steve Blanks. So you should be ok Mal
